Nice Teacher, Not Enough Discipline

Dear Guidance Guy,

I have this great math teacher. He is really clear and really nice, but some of the kids in my class (2 boys) give him a really hard time. I think he should write them referrals, because they are always goofing off, and nothing he says will stop them.

This is really annoying for me for 2 reasons. First, because my teacher is a great teacher and he shouldn't have to put up with it, but won't do anything. Second, because it's distracting and disgusting (both boys take their shoes off and swear in class) for me, and it's hard to focus.

What should I do?

Dear C.I.,

I'm glad your math teacher is nice. He is also not doing you any favors by not disciplining the two boys. Whatever his reasons are, they are clearly making it more difficult for you to learn. And I'm sure that's true for other students as well.

You can start by meeting with your teacher in private. Tell him how the behavior of these two boys is making you uncomfortable and distracted. You don't have to tell him what to do. He can figure it out for himself.

If things don't get better, telling a teacher or principal...or your parents is the next step. He may be a very nice teacher and good at explaining things. But if he wants to be a really great math teacher, controlling the class better - and standing up to misbehaving students - is something he will have to learn to do.

Thanks for your letter,
The Guidance Guy
