Needs Help With Vision
Dear Guidance Guy,
I have really bad eyesight. I can barely see a few feet away from me without my eyeglasses. I always have my eyeglasses on and I fear that my eyesight will get so bad that I might as well be blind! Is that even possible? Will I have eyeglasses forever? Give me some advice PLEASE!! I know there's such thing as contacts, but I have allergies and I'm used to eyeglasses. Also, I know there's such thing as Lasik Surgery (or whatever it's called), but I don't know if I will be able to pay for that (now or in the future).
One of my classmates wore glasses in the past, but she doesn't need glasses anymore and I feel so sad because I feel that I will never have that experience... I am losing hope... In science class one day, my teacher said that our eyes are being developed right now and that we should exercise our eye muscles so we won't need glasses. Well too late, I got that advice WAY too late. Please help me. Share your knowledge with me!
Sincerely,
Might As Well Be Blind

Dear Might As Well,
I have no advice to give you about your vision. I'm not a doctor, optometrist, or any other type of person that's qualified to give you that kind of advice. If you see your optometrist, he or she can give you the best advice.
Here's what I do know...the way you think about your vision and yourself has everything to do with how happy you are. Right now you're seeing your glasses as a horrible thing. And that's making you sad and making you think even more about them. What is it about glasses you hate so much?
Personally, I like them. I didn't need glasses until I was in way into my adult years. Then I started having trouble seeing at night. Glasses not only corrected my problem, I think they make me look more intelligent. It's all in how you see them - and yourself.
In the not too distant future there may be procedures that will correct vision much more easily. Lasik is supposed to be very effective. Talk with your optometrist about it. Having more information than you have now will only help. But remember: real beauty is in how you see yourself. Everyone else will take their cues from your self-confidence.
Your Pal,
The Guidance Guy
