Which School Should I Go To?

Dear Guidance Guy,

I am in middle school and I am having a decent time. But that's not were the problem lies. I am in my last year, and torn between going to two schools. Oneis "Mercury", and another is "Mars".

I have a father who teaches, and a mother who is a nurse. My dad teaches at "Mercury" and takes me there every once in awhile, so I know a general amount of information about it. I know that it has a good sports program, one of my main concerns. And it has a wide variety of students and teachers. The students tend to be normally friendly, and there isn't any sort of gangs around there.

My mother, an alumni of "Mars" high (around thrity years ago mind you), thinks that the campus and the sports program is very good. About 60 percent of my friends are going to Mars, and especially this girl I have a major crush on. My two main concerns are the violence that surrounds the campus, the students, and the atmosphere; and the fact that the school might be so large that I won't even see any of my friends.

Right now I am leaning more towards going to Mercury, partially because I met the coaching staff, and they are losing a reasonable amount of students to Mars, and it would be fairly easy to make the football team.

Sincerely,
Starstuck

Dear Starstruck,

It looks like you've sorted this out very well, wtih all the pros and cons of each. I don't think you're going to make a bad choice because you seem like the type of person who will find the good parts of any situation you're in.

But you asked, so I'll give you my best answer. What are the things that are most important to you now, and what will be the most important thing ten years down the road. I know it's hard to think about yourself that far into the future, but give it a shot. Are you career oriented? Are you very social? If someone woke you up from a sound sleep and asked what the most important thing in your life is, what would your immediate answer be - without thinking?

Whatever the answer to that question is, that's a clue in helping you decide which school is best for you. I have a feeling you will make friends wherever you go, or keep up the old friendships you have. So I wouldn't be too concerned with that. Listen to the opinions of other people and let that help guide you. But trust your instincts. I think deep down you know what to do - and will do it.

Best of Luck,
The Guidance Guy
