Teacher's Pet

Dear Guidance Guy,

I hate to admit it, but I am a teacher's pet. Every school year, I pick a teacher to adore and admire and try to get to notice me. But every single year, I regret all the embarrassing things that I did to try and impress her. I do not want this to happen again. Every year I see her through different eyes; one time I see her as an astounding beautiful teacher, the next time my next thought about this teacher is "What was I thinking?"

This year I have picked my English teacher. I like her; she's funny, kind, and understanding. She may be a bit looney at times, but I still like her. Here I go again with the whole teacher pet situation. I love her, but I don't want to embarrass myself. What should I do that will get her to like me but not to make me embarrassed? Thanks!

Sincerely,
Teacher's Pet

Dear Teacher's Pet,

The easiest answer I can give you is to just be yourself. You don't have to do anything to get her to like you. Chances are she likes you already, just as she does most of her students. If she's as great as you say she is, chances are she starts out liking all her students.

It seems as if you want to be special to her, beyond just the usual teacher and student relationship. I don't know of any way that happens by trying to make it so. Chemistry between two people is a funny thing...it's either there or it isn't. I DO know that people who very much like themselves are the most attractive to other people I'm not talking about the arrogant, conceited type of liking yourself. The truth is many of those people don't like themselves too much anyway. I'm talking about the type of person that has a healthy self-respect, can laugh at their own mistakes and doesn't worry if he or she finds out someone doesn't like them.

Bottom line: just be you. If you let your truly beautiful nature come out, the right people will love and support you. And you'll do the same for them.

Thanks for a great letter,
The Guidance Guy
