Organized, But Not Focused
Dear Guidance Guy,
I have a lot of things to do but sometimes I get so stressed out that I go into these weird .... I don't even know what to call it. Well, I give myself a little break but it lasts longer than I planned because the dreadful thought of going back to work forces me to just make my break last longer... I'm really stressed out and need help. I guess I'm a good organizer but I never seem to follow my own schedules. UGH HELP!!
Sincerely,
Vicky

Dear Vicki,
What you are describing is a very common problem. You are good at creating a system for yourself, but when it comes down to actually following it, it's another story. This is because you aren't feeling any exciitment about what you're supposed to do.
Here's a question...if you could work on anything you want, what would it be? What would make you want to keep going and only take breaks when you really needed them? Whatever it is, you'd feel that way because you love it and felt it was something important. The truth is at least part of the school work you're avoiding really is important for your future.
What might help is for you get more clear on what you'd like your life to be like in the future. In my book, SO, YOU WANNA TO GO COLLEGE... I ask students to look ten years down the road. This will begin the process of figuring out what's really important to you, which will help you to work more efficiently on the things you have to do now.
You've got a great start, Vicky. Building a system for yourself is a big part of the process (also covered in my book). Now finding the things that light you up is the next step. I am sure you will find them.
All The Best,
The Guidance Guy
