Spanish Mid Term Making Me Crazy

Dear Guidance Guy,

My teacher for Spanish is being really unfair. At the end of Spanish (end of the semester for me) we have a Spanish final. No big deal, right? We do a power point presentation, and an oral test. The only problem is when I was the days that we took the oral test she never called my name. So I thought "okay I will take it tomorrow."

No, in the middle of my lunch time she comes up to me in front of my friends, doesn't pull me aside, and says...well, here's a "script:"

Teacher: You never took your oral final, so when are you going to make that up?

Me: Oh well I could come in early..

Teacher: No I have a meeting in the morning.

Me: Well during lunch then.

Teacher: Well I guess then we'll have to make it work

(starts to walk away, then stops and turns around and says)

Oh and don't be surprised if you get points taken off for it being late.

Me ( in my head): WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What should I do? It's not my fault and why should I be punished for her mistake? I know that my temper gets the best of me sometimes so how can Icontrol my anger towards her?

Mad and Frustrated

*** *** ***

Dear M. and H.

Your teacher didn't say she was taking point off. She said "Oh and don't be surprise if you get points taken off for it being late." So it's not a definite. It's a maybe.

I don't think that was the best idea on your teacher's part. It would have been better if she was clear...you're either losing points or you aren't. But if you're sure it wasn't your fault...meaning it was assumed not everyone would finish the first day...you'll have to speak up and be assertive. That means explaining how you feel and why...in a mature and businesslike way. If you lose your temper you'll just sound like another kid who gets mad easily.

And you seem to have a point here. If things don't go well, you can take it to the next level. Talking to a counselor or principal with the facts might be a good thing. Read that part about losing your temper again. If you do, everyone will just think it's a kid who gets mad easily. Be taken seriously. Handle this with maturity and everything will be fine.

Best of Luck,
The Guidance Guy
