What Is A Best Friend?

Dear Guidance Guy,

I have a best friend, she's like a sister to me. But does she feel the same way? She says I'm her best friend but is she telling the truth? Is she lying to me? Recently, I thought my friendship with her was slipping away to one of my other friends. So how do I know if our friendship has been a lie?

Dear S.G.

I think you need to think carefully about what friendship means. What I see when I read your question is a lot of jealousy. That's a very difficult place for a friendship to grow. My opinion (and that of many other people) is that the more jealously in a relationship, the less room there is for fun.

Let me ask you this...is it possible to have more than one best friend? If someone is your best friend, do you want them to be happy? It looks like your best friend likes you, and other people too. And that's a good thing. It's healthy. If you have one best friend and you're always worried about losing her to someone else, you won't have any fun with her. You should have other friends too. It looks like you do.

Your friendship with this girl isn't a lie. It's good. In fact, both of you are growing. Let that happen naturally. Be yourself and let her be herself. Things will work out fine.

Thanks for your letter,
The Guidance Guy
