Staying After For An Exam

Dear Guidance Guy,

I am having some troubles at school. Well, you see the other day I was taking my final and everyone else finished except me, so my male teacher was in the class with me proctoring me. After I finished people from my class called me all kinds of names and stuff like that. I began crying in the bathroom and everything is OK now. But today I had a social studies final and I only had one question left but all the people in my class were leaving to lunch so I just handed it in. Did I do the right thing or should I have stayed and finished it?

Confused

Dear Confused,

I deleted the names people called you, but it is obvious they suggested you were fooling around with your teacher. Of course, you weren't. And it looks like this time you left before finishing your test because you didn't want to go through that same experience again.

The answer to your question is that you never have to do things based on what other people will think. You only have to do what is right for you. People will do and say all kinds of silly things. That gets a little better as you get older, but not all the way. Once you show people you aren't worried about what they think - that you have the courage to do what's right for you - they'll leave you alone. Even if they don't it won't matter, because you won't care about what they say anyway.

That kind of self-confidence is a lot of fun. Try it sometime!

All The Best,
The Guidance Guy
