False Friends

Dear Guidance Guy,

I think someone is only pretending to be my friend. I don't know if that person is really my friend or not. He/she talks to me a lot, and we have been friends for about a month now...at least I think so. He/she is new to our school. I think that he/she is not really my friend because I am popular in school and I think that he/she wants to be popular too and because my friends have told me that that person has spread a lot of rumors about me behind my back. But then he/she apologized about it and now I think the whole thing is starting all over again, I don't know what to believe. What should I do?

Clueless

*** *** ***

Dear Clueless,

You don't have any trust in this person, otherwise you wouldn't be writing to me. The person spread rumors about you and you're afraid it's happening again. What do you have to be friends about?

I'm not telling you what to do, and you certainly don't have to be enemies with this person. But you don't have to spend time and energy on someone you're not sure about. There are too many other people who will like and respect you just the way you are.

Besides, you're popular! You have your pick of people to be friends with! Even if you weren't popular, you don't need false friends. One or two good ones is more than enough.

All The Best,
The Guidance Guy
