My Science Teacher Hates Me.
Dear Guidance Guy,
I think my science teacher hates me. Whenever I don't finish a test she comments on how slow I am and how I need to hurry up, then she won't let me come in and finish up the test. But then after school whenever I go in I see my friends in there making up the test, who were there on the test day. I have talked to her about this, but she still won't let me finish it up. This has happened on numerous occasions.
Plus, whenever I don't understand something, she just asks me why I wasn't paying attention earlier when she was explaining it. When I tell her I was, she just yells at me and treats me like an idiot. Sometimes, in order to avoid embarrassment, I won't ask for help. But then I do badly on it and she yells at me then too. Mygrade keeps dropping lower and lower, and I am scared because now that I am in high school my grades are really important.
I really want the extra help for my grade, but it's very hard to learn from her, and I hate getting embarrassed. What should I do?

Dear Frustrated,
There could be some kind of conflict going on between the two of you. Your version of it makes it seem like there's some unfair behavior coming from her. Of course, she'll have her own side of the story. And the truth is usually somewhere in the middle.
Somthing like this is probably going to be resolved at a time where there is no test to be made up or assignment to be explained. Maybe you can make an appointment to see her before or after school. Having a parent or guidance counselor be there as well would be a good idea, just to keep things fair. You'll still have to do most of the talking, but it will keep the teacher from being too harsh on you.
Tell her how you feel, and use specific examples. Don't accuse her of hating you, just tell her how her actions affect you. And be ready to listen to her response. My guess is that she doesn't know how harsh she acts and will be willing to fix it.
Best of Luck,
The Guidance Guy
