Teacher Who Talks Too Much

Dear Guidance Guy,

I have a teacher who TALKS NON STOP and I can't seem to grasp what she saying because I kind of tune her out. What should I do?

Jelly Bean

Dear Jelly Bean,

You have two choices. First, you can meet with her before or after class and - very gently - explain it's hard to focus on the important parts of her lesson because you aren't quite sure which ones are important with all of the other things she says. This is a nice way of saying she's a motor mouth. I'm sure she'll understand what you're trying to tell her. She may not react too well, but if she's mature, she'll get it. I suggest you practice EXACTLY what you want to say with someone else before you speak with her.

Second: figure out what the main parts of the lesson are going to be. There are usually key words or concepts teachers give out during a class. If you try and tune into to the key words, it will become easier to focus at the right times. You'll need to find out in advance what she intends to teach, then pay as much attention as possible. You'll also have to set aside your frustration with her and realize she's doing the best she knows how.

Try one or both of these ideas. And let me know how things work out.

Good Luck,
The Guidance Guy
