Secretive Substitute Teacher

Dear Guidance Guy,

Um, well I haven't been feeling great lately and I'm at my wit's end. I think your advice would put me at ease seeing as you understand teachers. Here's the story...

I was walking back to my class and a staff member (who was a former teacher last year but is filling in a post for another teacher) approached me and told me she was very worried about me. Now after hearing this I asked her why and she wouldn't respond, which to me is kind of abnormal. Then she said she just had a feeling and then walked away and as she was walking away said "I just wanted to tell you that!" and left. So I stood there feeling very very unhappy not knowing what to think or do.

The problem is she's not my teacher but is in charge of a group in which i participate,so it's not like I never talk to her. But what I'd like to know is, should I approach her or what? I'm not happy about this and I want to know what to do.

Please help,
Distressed

Dear Distressed,

This teacher handled the situation very poorly. She might be observing your behavior and is concerned for your well-being (you mentioned you haven't been feeling great). If that's the case she needs to share this information directly with you or with a school counselor or one of your parents. She also might know something someone else is saying about or doing to you. If so, it's completely inappropriate to drop a comment like that and not provide more information.

Lastly, it's also possible she's setting you up for some kind of good surprise. Maybe there's another part to this that ends with a bunch of people throwing you a party. I'm not in your day to day situation, so I don't know if this is realistic.

In any event, I think you should let your counselor, parents and school admininstrator what's going on right away. If there is a situation where you're in potential trouble - physical or otherwise - you have a legal right to know what it is. If she's reacting to "he said, she said" types of comments, she needs to use much better judgement and keep her mouth closed.

Best of Luck,
The Guidance Guy
