Mistreatment of Students

Dear Guidance Guy,

How do and to whom do I make formal complaints to regarding mistreatment of children and hostile treatment of parents by school administration and teachers?

Dear Christina,

Mistreatment is a very big word. If you mean physical or emotional abuse or neglect, you need to call your state's child protection agency. Be very specific about the kind of mistreatment you're talking about. They'll want to know who, what, when, where, how long, etc. That kind of mistreatment is criminal behavior.

If you're talking about a school that treats its kids and parents poorly but doesn't abuse them, you can go up the chain of command starting with the principal. I'm guessing you already tried this and didn't like the results. The next step is the school superintendent. Again be specific about what you don't like. Who, what, how, where and when are very important. You can also seek out someone from your board of education and ask them to intervene.

If you're not getting the results you want, your state deparement of education probably has a telephone number for parent comments or complaints. An official from the agency will usually talk with you and see if they can help fix whatever's wrong. Again, facts and documentation are important.

Hope That Helps,
The Guidance Guy
