I Wanna Be Popular
Dear Guidance Guy,
I want to be as popular and pretty as the twins in my school. I feel so ugly compared to them. They are always getting asked out by boys while I'm practically getting ignored by them. They have the best clothes and actually influenced my best friend from fourth grade. Now she turned all girly and practically ignores me.
I want to be popular- please! I really want to stop wearing my glasses but I have to because I can't see without them. But if I do take them off I look weird because everybody is used to seeing me with them on.
Help Please,
Wating To Be Popular (Not a Wanna Be)

Dear Waiting,
There's something you need to get clear on right now. Being popular isn't about being pretty or being smart or strong or having glasses or anything else. Being popular is ALL about one thing: self-confidence.
If you really look around, you'll find the most popular people are the ones who feel good about themselves. Some of them are pretty and thin and smart, etc. And some are heavy, have glasses, braces and pimples, get bad grades and trip over their own feet. It's not about any of that. It's about how you feel about yourself. And the only one who gets to decide that is you.
There is one other thing. Popular people are almost always very nice to other people. The ones who are mean or sarcastic or try to leave other people out may seem popular. But more people are scared of them than actually like them. That kind of "popularity" never lasts.
Here's what you can do...find something about yourself you like. If you're not sure, ask a friend or parent about one good quality you have. And keep that in your head when you talk with others.
And try to be nice to people. Not the "you're cool and I'm not cool so I'll worship you" kind of nice. Everyone has a favorite subject: themselves. Ask about them and you'll be talking about something they're interested in.
As you get older you'll find that the stuff on the outside is much less important than the stuff on the inside. That's what attracts people to you, and what makes you feel good about yourself.
Your Pal,
The Guidance Guy
