I Ripped Up My Quiz

Dear Guidance Guy,

I recently took a very hard quiz and ripped it. Everyone in my class did this, but Iwas the only one to get in trouble for it. I retook the quiz today, but when I gothome the teacher called my house to set up a parent-teacher conference. What should I do?

Dear Sad,

Somthing tells me there may be more to the story than you're telling me. Either you ripped the quiz pretty forcefully, or you've been in trouble before, or your grades aren't very good. Or possibly lots of parents are getting calls for parent teacher conferences. Ripping up a quiz is a pretty rough thing to do, and the teacher might have felt it was disrespectful. If I were the teacher, I wouldn't have liked it.

The best thing you can do is go to the conference - if you're invited. Tell your side of the story, including what you might have done wrong and how you can do better next time. Most parent teacher conferences are scheduled to help kids do better, not to punish (although this happens sometimes as well.) Other than that, there isn't much for you to do. Relax and let things go the way they will.

And try not to rip up quizzes in the future.

Your Pal,
The Guidance Guy
