I Didn't Make The Team; What Next?

Dear Guidance Guy,

I tried out for the soccer team and didnt make it. I want to keep playing soccer but I'm scared that I won't make the other team too. Soccer is my favorite sport but I guess I'm not good enough for it. Should I quit soccer just because I didn't make the school team or should I do what my heart says?

Dear S.T.W.

One person on one day decided you weren't good enough for one particular team. That doesn't make you not good enough for another team, or the same team at a different time. One thing you can do is ask the person who decided not to put you on the team where you need to improve. This will help for any other teams you try out for. Maybe there is a league that let's in anyone, like a town league or park and recreation league. Maybe you can play with other kids in pick-up games. You can even volunteer to help out with the school team if you want to be close to it.

Whether or not you should quit depends on how commited you are to the game and to getting better. I think you already know what you should do, because you asked if you should do what your heart says. In this case, I'd love to see you follow your heart and go after the thing you love to do. Even if it doesn't work out right away, something good will come from your efforts in the near future.

Best of Luck,
The Guidance Guy
