Friendship Turning Into Something More?
Dear Guidance Guy,
I've been best friends with this guy since 3rd grade. We're in the 9th grade now. When we were in 8th grade, one of our 'new' friends that we'd met at the schoolthat year as well as a couple other people asked if we were going out. This one girl had her mind made up that we were going to go out/be together some time in the future. Both of us said we weren't going out, never had gone out & that we never would go out.
Then after a while, I started to like him. I'm not sure if it's because that was the first time I'd ever thought about 'us' or if I just started to like him at that time. We're a lot alike and have almost exactly the same personality. He knows me the best and has known me the longest of any of my friends. He had his first girl friend in the 7th grade and he's had quite a few more since then and I know he really likes this other girl. I think I catch my self getting jealous at times. We go to movies & different stuff, just the two of us, but never as a couple or anything.
I have a feeling I like him but I don't think he likes me. how can I tell if he does? Should I tell him that I like him or not? I don't want to tell him I like him and then have him not like me, so that it's awkward every time we hang out or go somewhere together. or worse, not be friends anymore. I know that telling him would definitely change our relationship but I don't know if it will be for the better or worse. Maybe it's just a phase?

Dear Baby,
If your friend hadn't said anything about the two of you going out, would the thought have crossed your mind? That might be one way to look at it.
I don't tell people they should or shouldn't go out with someone, except when something's dangerous or illegal. I'll tell you what I see, and that you two have a good thing going right now. You enjoy each other's company and there doesn't seem to be any tension. I also know that it's a rare ninth grade relationship that lasts more than a few months before an awkward break up. If you want to go out with him and then most likely go through this, take your chances.
I like your last question about this being a phase. Maybe the next phase in your friendship is something romantic. The best boyfriend/girlfriend relationships are the ones that come naturally. Maybe the next phase is one of you gets intersted in someone else and you get to keep the cool friendship you have now. I don't know, but it sounds kind of cool no matter what happens.
Best of Luck,
The Guidance Guy
