Drama Or No Drama...That Is The Question!
Dear Guidance Guy,
I am starting High School next year and cannot decide on what classes to take. I need one foreign language and have one free elective. I don't know if I wantto take band or drama. I feel like band is not really where my heart is next year. It was fun and all, but next year I don't think I will like it even though I can get scholarships. Drama seems more fun and like me than band. It's something I can get into. Please help. What should I do?
Signed,

Dear Indecisive,
Part of the answer to your question has to do with how many drama courses your school has. If there are only a couple, you can get them in other years. If you can take it every year, it's another story.
If your heart isn't in band, there are probably other courses you can take. It might be a great idea to go through a list of all these courses (which is probably on your high school's website or program of studies book) and find the ones that interest you the most. Keep in mind these are usually the courses you request. There's no guarantee you'll get them. Sometimes there aren't enough spaces for all the students who want them.
One final suggestion: see if you can talk with students who are in some of these courses now. Get their opinions on what they like and what they don't. You'll still have to make up your own mind, but the perspective of other kids might help.
By the way, unless you play a very unusual instrument that's in high demand - or play extremely well - the chances of your getting a band scholarship aren't very strong. No one should stay in band strictly because they think they can get a scholarship. Usually they won't play well enough simply because they've lost their enjoyment.
Best of Luck,
The Guidance Guy
