Middle School Troubles

Dear Guidance Guy,

A couple of years ago my twin sister and I were adopted. Now my twin had to leave my house because of her behavior was too bad. I am in middle school and it is going horribly. I already got suspended for fighting with a kid. I have to have teachers come with me in the hallway and all my friends are turning into kids who smoke and drink and we're only 13 years old. Then I have a science teacher that I can't stand. She is always telling me to do stuff that I don't want to do. It seems to me that some teachers just like to yell at kids, and they aren't there because they like kids. What should I do?

Not So Happy

Dear Not So Happy,

I'm sorry for the troubles you're going through at such a young age. And I compliment you for being able to write so well about them. Being able to communicate your feelings and not keeping them bottled up is one of the most important things you can do. The ones who don't know how to get their feelings out the right way are the ones who keep fighting and getting in trouble.

The first thing you should do is realize there are many more people who want to help you then to make your life miserable. And most of the people you think are mean are actually just frustrated. They probably want to help but don't know how, so they seem mean. Who are the people in your school who are really nice? Spend as much time with them as you can.

There are almost no teachers who like to yell at kids. They just run out of ideas in how to deal with difficult students. You ran out of ideas and had a fight with another kid, so you might understand a little bit about what your science teacher is going through. Maybe you can meet with her outside of class (maybe with a guidance counselor or other adult) and figure out how to make things work together. I bet she'd be very interested in that kind of meeting. You can get to see her in a whole new way.

Keep looking for answers and try to see the good parts in every situation. With time and patience, things will get better.

Best of Luck,
The Guidance Guy
