How To Deal With Stress

Dear Guidance Guy,

This year I am struggling a lot with grades and stress. I have already started smoking and I wish I hadn't. I am having trouble with friends. To top that off Ihave two D+'s. What should I do?

Dear Guess Who,

I'm a little surprised you starting smoking because of stress, unless you used to smoke and stopped. Most people start because of peer pressure. If that's you started, all you have to do is decide to stop. I'm impressed that you want to stop. Most kids who start happily smoke away until their money and health are gone.

The best way to deal with stress, poor grades and friend problems is to put yourself in a different environment. Start by talking with a counselor at school. This won't solve all your problems, but at least you'll be getting support from someone else. If your parents are someone you can easily talk with, be honest about everything that's happening with you. Chances are they'll find out about your grades and smoking if they haven't already. Better you tell them than they find out through someone else.

Finally, try reading some books, listening to audios and watching things that are inspiring. My two favorite books for kids are Chicken Soup For The Teenage Soul (available in bookstores) and How To Juggle (and Change Your Life Forever. I wrote that book, so of course I'm a little prejudiced!

If you learn to deal with stress at a young age, you will have a great head start on a great life. Things may seem tough now, but I am sure you will find a way to make them better.

Your Pal,
The Guidance Guy
