Does He Like Me?
Dear Guidance Guy,
There's this guy in 8th grade who I totally have a crush on. I really really like him, he's so cute and funny and witty. He's nice to me, but he doesn't even botherto look at me or talk to me at all. There's a dance coming up soon and I want him to ask me, but my brother said the guys only ask the "pretty" girls. I would ask him, but I don't know him well enough. One of his friends said he liked me, but I don't know if he was just teasing him. Should I just get over this, or not? What should I do?

How is he nice to you if he's not looking at or talking to you? It's good that he's not mean, but it doesn't seem as if you have any kind of relationship that would make him want to ask you out.
Your brother is half right. Guys ask the "pretty girls" out, meaning a guy will ask out a girl he sees as pretty. But the pretty girls aren't always who you think they are. Someone could be overweight, have lots of acne, etc. and be "pretty." And someone else might have perfect skin, a nice body, etc. and not be pretty. What's the difference? Confidence! If you feel good about yourself, have a great smile and know how to communicate with other people, chances are you'll be an attractive person.
And the best news is that anyone can learn to be confident. You just have to appreciate yourself for who you are right now. Don't worry about this guy asking you out. If he doesn't, it's his loss. Go to the dance with whomever you'll have a good time with, girls or guys. Have fun and think of yourself as beautiful. Before long, you'll have lots of people asking you places.
