Will I Be Prepared In Time For College?
Dear Guidance Guy,
I'm a sophomore at school but I still have no idea on what I want to be when I grow up. I agree with my parents that I already should have an idea on what I want to do, but sadly, I don't. Do you think it's necessary to have my career goals already set for me now, or is it OK if I'm a little late in the game? Do you think I'll be prepared in time for college? Please help!

Dear Confused,
It's a good idea to have a sense of the general areas your interested in. It will make it much easier for you to choose courses in 11th and 12 grades if you know what direction you'd like to head in. And of course it will make planning for life after high school easier - and more fun.
I wouldn't worry too much about an exact career. The kinds of jobs and occupations that will be around in six to ten years will probably be very different than those that are here right now. Some things won't change. Do you see yourself working more with other people? Machines? Computers? Ideas and concepts? These are some of the things you can start thinking about now. And it's also a good idea to get information about the different types of work that are out there. Try talking to people in many different types of fields. See what they like and dislike about their own careers. This should give you some ideas.
I am sure if you start thinking about things now - without putting pressure on yourself - you can be ready to make some great choices by the time you graduate high school. Talk to your guidance counselor or visit your career center if your school has one. There is lots of good information for you in my book, SO, YOU WANNA GO TO COLLEGE... And there is great stuff for parents in SO, YOUR KID WANTS TO GO TO COLLEGE... In both books there is an exact road map of what you should be doing in each high school grade to get ready for a great college experience and career.
Hope that helps. Enjoy tenth grade!
