Scared of Starting High School
Dear Guidance Guy,
This year I'm just starting high school and it's very scary. I know two peoplein the whole school. My friend is only in one of my classes and I am the shyestand quietest kid (I'm also only 4' 10" tall ). What do you talk about to a personyou just met?
Many of the people from my old school are going but I haven't talked to themsince grade four. What should I talk about when I try talking to them?
Here's another big problem. My friend and I have to go to special education . I know I'mgoing to be made fun of and I'm used to it but my friend is very sensitive. Howshould we deal with it?
Thank you,
Worried Student

Dear Worried,
Talking to new kids should be very easy. Just take a moment to listen to what they're talking about, and say something about it when it seems like the right time. People like other people who listen to them, so if you spend a lot of time letting them talk at the beginning, you'll do fine. Just be yourself.
As far as going to special education, I'd be surprised if people made fun of you. I'm guessing no one will care about which classes you're in unless you make an issue of it. And if other kids do make fun of you, it's because they're insecure about themselves.
Your friend's sensitivity is something she will have to learn to deal with. It's not your job to deal with it. If you want to help her, be as normal and comfortable as you can. You will be a role model of the best way to relax and enjoy high school. If she's ready, she'll watch how you handle yourself and copy it.
Have a Great Year,
The Guidance Guy
