Shy Kid Looking For New Friends

Dear Guidance Guy,

I just started school, I got my schedule and none of my friends are in any of myclasses. So I decided to be brave and handle it alone. Then I found out thereare new people I want to hang out with but they are all with someone else.

I am really shy. How do I become brave enough to get some new friends withoutturning back to the bad ones?

HELP!!!

Dear HELP!!!

Most kids like to make their circle of friends bigger, and usually welcome in new kids who they feel are like themselves. So this might be easier than you think.

The best way to meet some of the new people is to get near them, and listen. Don't try to talk over them or impress them. Just be interested in them. Ask questions about them and what they like to do. Since you are shy anyway, it should be easy to let them do most of the talking. People are always intersted in people who are interested in them.

I'm curious about your last sentence. How did you get mixed up with bad people? I'm guessing it was because you weren't sure of yourself so you drifted into a crowd of kids who do things that aren't good. If that's the case, please be careful. I want you to have friends who make you feel good, not ones who worry you with the choices they make and put you in possibly bad situations.

It's OK to be shy and quiet. Be proud of who you are and you will find the right people coming into your life.

Have a Great Year,
The Guidance Guy
