A Boyfriend This Year Would Be Great

Dear Guidance Guy,

Last year was just OK, but this year I want it to be great. One of the top things on my list is a boyfriend. Last year I dated only one guy, but that lasted about two weeks, I had other guys ask me out, none seemed my type. It seems like only the wrong guys like me. My friends say that it is OK not to have a boyfriend , but I think different.

I have been looking for someone I share interests with, I have even tried to hook up with my stepbrother's friend. So do I keep looking or do I sit and wait.

Dear Confused,

Having a boyfriend or girlfriend is a great feeling. Like you said, it's someone you can share with, laugh with, cuddle with, etc. I'm all for dating when the time is right and when the reasons are right.

Having a boyfriend or girlfriend as a trophy, a rite of passage or to feel less lonely is also something that kids do. These are the "relationships" that last a week or so, then end badly. They also cause people to lose their self-confidence and go after the wrong people.

Your friend is right. It is OK to not have a boyfriend. It's also great to have one if you're doing so for the right reasons. The way to make this year great is to do the things that make you happy. Good grades in school, great friends (boys or girls), clubs and groups you like being in, all these things and more will make a great year.

And here's some good news: when you do the things that make you happy, you get a big smile on your face and become VERY attractive to other people. So your chances of getting a boyfriend become much better. And it won't be someone you're looking for. It will be someone who is looking for you! Won't it be great to choose a guy you like rather than the wrong guys liking you???

Your Pal,
The Guidance Guy
