Back To School:The GREAT News...
Dear Readers,
I wanted to take this chance to wish all of you going back to school a fantastic year. Late August is the time I like to give advice on how to make the school year great. Being organized, knowing how to make friends, etc...these are all important things.
I want to give you only one piece of advice to start the year: Be Excited!
Now for some of you who enjoyed sleeping late everyday, hanging out with friends, warm weather, etc, that may be a little hard to deal with. You may be thinking your favorite part of the year is ending and now you have to start the rest of it.
Work with me here for a minute (wink).
Many of you don't get a chance to see your friends as much as you would like to, and school is the chance to heat up your social life a bit. When I used to be the principal of a summer school, I remember all the kids coming in for the morning class. You would imagine they'd be in a bad mood, having to go to school in July and August (and retaking a course they already failed).
But they were all smiles. Many of them had their friends with them. They did what they had to do for two (or four) hours, then go on to the next part of their day. Many of them went to summer jobs. Rather than being a "slacker" summer, they did stuff that got them money and high school credits.
So your social life is one reason to be excited about getting back, but I know an even bigger reason...
Think about this: if you're reading this you live in a country where the opportunites are incredible. Whether it's the USA, England, Ireland, Canada, etc., you're in a place where you can be anything you want to be, do anything you want to do, go anywhere you want to go.
And the key to all of this: your education.
Yeah, school isn't perfect. Sometimes you get crabby teachers. Sometimes homework is boring. Sometimes you have to learn things you're not interested in and don't make any sense.
But you have an opportunity that most of the world wishes they had. You get to learn and do things no other generation in history ever had the chance to do.
And you can start from wherever you are now, and do it little by little. The son or daugther of a poor family can become rich. It happens everyday!
Make this your little secret: you are getting the education now that can start you on the road to wealth, happiness and security. You're getting a gift. Put it to use and be glad for it.
Make this your best year ever!
